Lakeville's Travis Gunderson shows he still has the ball after tagging Burnsville's Rob Wiens in a Region 5 playoff game last week at Alimagnet Park. Burnsville won 7-6 to earn the region's top seed in the state Class B men's amateur baseball tournament that begins next weekend. Lakeville also qualified for the state tournament.

This year is the first time in a while - and perhaps ever - that the Lakeville Athletics felt they could compete with anybody on any day.
In years past, Athletics coach Doug Johnson could look at who the other team's starting pitcher was, or how many players were on his bench, and know the team was in for a difficult time.
"There were many games when we had only nine or 10 guys show up to play," Johnson said. "We never had to cancel a game, but we came close a few times. Some games, the coaches had to play.
"This is a year when, every time we've gone out there, I felt we had a chance to win."
Now the Athletics get a chance to win a few more. By finishing second in the Region 5 tournament, Lakeville's town team earned a spot in the state Class B men's amateur baseball tournament beginning Sunday, Aug. 21, in Hutchinson.
Lakeville plays a first-round game in the double-elimination state tournament at 11 a.m. Region 5 champion Burnsville plays at 1:30 p.m. The tourney continues through Labor Day in Hutchinson and Dassel-Cokato.
Lakeville (19-10) clinched its state tournament berth with an 11-3 win over Eagan on Aug. 11 at Alimagnet Park in Burnsville. The next day, the Athletics lost to Burnsville 7-6 in a game to determine the region's top seed at state.
This is the first state tournament appearance for the Athletics, who were formed in 2000. Johnson hoped to draw some players from a talented group that graduated from Lakeville High School in 1999, but only two players from the original town team remain.
Several more played for Lakeville High's state runner-up team in 2000. The Athletics do not yet have any players from Lakeville's 2005 state high school championship team.
Eleven members of the team graduated from Lakeville High, and nine are current or former Gustavus Adolphus College players.
Johnson made some moves to improve his team's pitching and defense. He added shortstop Aaron Madson, who played college ball at Gustavus, and Brock Stimson, a 2004 Lakeville High graduate now attending Wisconsin-Stout. Madson and Stimson are among nine players new to the Athletics' roster this year.
"Defense is probably our biggest improvement," Johnson said. "A couple of the players we added have really helped us defensively. And we can go six or seven deep with our pitching."
The Athletics didn't have to sacrifice any offense with the commitment to defense and pitching. Madson, Bryant Rogness and Andy Schmidt each had two hits and scored two runs in the victory over Eagan that sent Lakeville to the state tournament.
Jon Gaylord, Josh Storm and Mark Berger also have hit well this season, Johnson said.
Trent Larson pitched a complete game in the victory over Eagan.
Schmidt, who will be a baseball captain at Gustavus next spring, is likely to be the starting pitcher in the first-round state tournament game.
State tournament rules allow a participating team to draft as many as three players from other teams in its region that did not advance. Travis Peterson of Savage, Josh Wigley of Apple Valley and Charlie Borrell of Eagan will join Lakeville for the state tournament.
Peterson and Wigley can pitch, which will help the Athletics compensate for losing Stimson, who is starting football practice at Wisconsin-Stout and is not expected to play in the state tournament.

The Lakeville Athletics and Burnsville Bobcats advanced to the amateur state tournament this year and both teams are entering with high hopes.
This is a pretty big deal for the Lakeville Athletics and its program.
The town baseball team has been around for six years and this is its first trip to state.
“This is our best team ever, for sure,” Lakeville coach Doug Johnson said.
“It was a struggle for us for a few middle years where we had trouble getting guys that were committed,” Johnson said. “We’ve got a better core this year. They’re more reliable.”
Making the state tournament should keep the team competitive down the road.
“Maybe now some guys will pick us over a couple other teams,” Johnson said. “It will really help with recruitment.”
Lakeville advanced with a big win over Eagan 11-3 Aug. 9.
Eagan jumped out with a 3-0 lead, but it was all Lakeville from there.
In the Section 5 championships, Burnsville won 7-6, giving them the top seed in the tournament.
Burnsville has had a solid season and aims to be very competitive in the state tournament. The team was 22-8 overall and 11-4 in the Cannon Valley League and they went 3-0 in the Section 5 tournament.
“We stared a little slow offensively,” Burnsville head coach Kevin McDermott said. “Our pitching held and we were able to win a couple, but our hitting came around.”
Burnsville will play at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 21 against Jordan in Hutchinson. Jordan is the returning state champ from last year.
With a win, the team would play at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at Dassel and with a loss the team would play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25.
Lakeville will take on Chaska at 11 a.m. Aug. 21 in Hutchinson in the first round. With a win, the team would play at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26. With a loss, the team would play at 5 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 25.
Lakeville has never played Chaska but they like their chances.
“With our pitching and defense I think we can be competitive and I think we’re going to win a couple games,” Johnson said. “They both won us several games this year.”
Lakeville’s ace Andy Schmidt should get the starting nod in the first game and probably the second.
“He’s had a couple one-hitter and several other low-hit totals and low-scoring games,” Johnson said. “He’s been our ace all year.”
The key to winning the big games will be timely hitting, according to Johnson.
“Sometimes we struggle with two outs or with base runners,” Johnson said. “If we get some of those hits we should be just fine.”
The Class B state tournament is a double elimination.
Both teams get to draft three players from other teams in the section when they reach the state tournament.
Lakeville drafted Charlie Borell of Eagan, Savage’s Travis Peterson and Josh Wigley of Apple Valley.
Burnsville took in Jeremy Hinderks from Eagan, Matt Gardner from Eagan and Joe Neilson from Apple Valley. All three are pitchers.
But Burnsville won’t be featuring anybody unless they are needed.
“Our guys got us here, so they’re the ones who are going to play,” McDermott said. “If we get into trouble we may use them, but I’m going to go with my pitchers as long as I can. My team got us there. I’d rather have my guys.”
